AI Agent Communication Protocols MCP, ACP, A2A, and ANP

As artificial intelligence becomes more sophisticated, we are moving from single AI models to complex systems of multiple AI agents working together. These multi-agent systems (MAS) have the potential to solve incredibly complex problems, but they face a fundamental challenge: how do the agents talk to each other?

Just like humans need language to cooperate, AI agents need communication protocols. These protocols are the rules of the road for AI interaction, defining how agents can exchange information, request actions, and work together on tasks. This post explores four of the most promising agent communication protocols (ACPs) and what they mean for the future of AI.

The Protocols: A Quick Tour

There are several ACPs in development, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Here’s a look at four of the most prominent ones:

1. Model Context Protocol (MCP)

Developed by Anthropic, MCP focuses on secure and reliable tool use for Large Language Models (LLMs). It uses a client-server model where the LLM can securely call external tools and get back structured data. This is a big step forward for making LLMs more capable and reliable, but the centralized model could become a bottleneck in very large systems.

2. Agent Communication Protocol (ACP)

ACP takes a different approach, using REST-native messaging to allow for richer, more flexible communication. It supports multimodal responses, meaning agents can exchange not just text, but also images, audio, and other data formats. This flexibility comes at a cost, however, as the asynchronous nature of ACP makes it more complex to manage and secure.

3. Agent-to-Agent Protocol (A2A)

Google’s A2A protocol is designed for large-scale, enterprise-level task orchestration. It uses a peer-to-peer model, which is inherently more scalable than MCP’s client-server approach. A2A also introduces the concept of “Agent Cards,” which are like digital business cards for agents, defining their capabilities and permissions. This makes it easier to manage and secure a large network of agents.

4. Agent Network Protocol (ANP)

ANP is the most decentralized of the four protocols. It aims to create an open marketplace for AI agents, where they can discover each other and collaborate securely, even if they are built on different platforms. ANP uses decentralized identifiers (DIDs) and other open standards to enable this internet-scale agent network.
